Homeopathy. Not just a great word for Scrabble, but also an incredibly popular alternative medicine. But does it work?
Homeopathy is based on the idea that illnesses can be cured by substances that produce similar symptoms. Water molecules have a memory of the original substance and thus share its properties. Studies suggest it rates on par with placebo, but last year protesters around the world took part in a mass-overdose of homeopathic remedies, swallowing 80 pills each. The result? Well, no-one fell ill, but according to spokesman Martin Robbins, “No-one was cured of anything either.”
