Postnatal depression is common in women after they’ve given birth, and it seems to make sense that if women receive professional support after giving birth it would reduce the chances of developing depression. However research at the Institute of Psychiatry in London comparing support from a home-visiting nurse to medication from a general practitioner or psychiatrist found that the medication was far more effective. They also found – disturbingly – that in this day and age, postnatal depression is still grossly under-diagnosed. Tonic explores what can be done for women suffering from the debilitating condition.
